June Reading Roundup

I have been working on trying to read through my TBR pile that I have on my bookshelf but sometimes I get distracted. I accidentally checked out a few books from the library when I brought my kids to the library to do the after school activities.

My first read of the month was A History of What Comes Next by Sylvain Neuvel. I was not a huge fan of this book. It is a sci fi book. I don’t normally go for these types of books, but I do try to expand my repertoire so I wanted to try something new. I gave it 3 stars. It wasn’t a horrible book. It was well written but the story was so weird. I found myself cringing at some of the scenes because the story line was weird to me. Anyone who likes sci fi would like this book. It did make me do a lot of thinking though. I wouldn’t read it again, but maybe someone else will find it enjoyable.

My second choice was a book that I found at a little free library. I chose the book because one of my favorite actresses is on the cover. It is a book that was turned into a movie. I will be watching the movie when I get a couple minutes to myself. It’s called Adrift: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Survival at Sea by Tami Oldham Ashcraft. Overall the story was good. It made me feel sad and happy. I don’t normally cry about books but this one brought the tears on. I gave the book 3 stars because it was very technical. I had to do a lot of googling to understand some of what was talked about in the book. I don’t normally read nonfiction, but this one reeled me in. I read it in 2 days because I couldn’t put it down.

I then read another library book titled The Gracekeepers by Kirsty Logan. This is kind of a dystopian type book. I found it a little boring. I found it hard to stay focused on the book. It was just not a book I would read again. The writing was good but the storyline was dragged out. I gave the book 3 stars.

This next book surprised me. I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it as much as I did. It’s part of a series and I will most definitely be continuing the series. It was Taken by Erin Bowman. It’s a dystopian book that gave a different idea of what the world would look like if there was a catastrophic event. Dystopian is my favorite genre and I try to read as many books within this genre as I can. I’d recommend this book!

This next book I read in college and enjoyed. It was Dear John by Nicholas Sparks. I’m not a love story type reader. Most of the books are predictable. This one I really enjoyed the first time I read and enjoyed just as much the second time. Yes I’ve also watched the movie. Probably one of my favorites. This book will always be 5 stars for me.

I ended the month with What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen. I have read almost all of the books she has written and I will always choose one if I find it out in the wild. I fell in love with books by her and Jodi Picoult and have read almost all their books. They are well written and the stories reel me in every time. It’s a good comfort read for me. I gave this book 4 stars.

I was a little disappointed with the books I started the month with, but ended on a good note. I can’t wait to see what other good books I find.
